The North American Sabreliner was developed for the U.S. Air Force and Navy in the 1950s, and both military and civilian models were built. More than 800 Sabreliners were completed before production ended in 1981. While most were the civilian type, about 200 T-39 military trainer versions were produced and many of those have now been introduced into the civilian world. Starting with the Series 40, the mid-range Sabreliner provided increased cabin space, and the final model, Series 75, could carry up to 10 passengers. North American merged with Rockwell International in 1973, and beginning with the Series 60, the jet was powered by turbofan rather than pure turbojet engines.
